In addition, and without expressly wanting it, the archer hit his apparent target: he was aiming at another, within himself. I've always thought, I've whispered a few times, that when it comes to martial arts, all we have in the West is music. A violin, a voice, a work, it's a duel, it's a duet, it's judo. Knowing how to give in, cunning with the adversary, letting her do it in order to have the hold, that was what, in great times, was playing music."

Des civilisations mieux averties des arts martiaux que la nôtre nous enseignent que, dans le combat, il s’agit moins d’avoir le dessus, de supprimer l’adversaire, que de mesurer avec lui un accord de forces. C’est de surcroit et sans le vouloir expressément que l’archer atteint sa cible apparente : il en visait une autre, à l’intérieur de lui-même. J’ai toujours pensé, j’ai quelque fois chuchoté qu’en fait d’art martiaux, il ne nous restait plus, en Occident, que la musique. Un violon, une voix, une oeuvre, c’est un duel, c’est un duo, c’est du judo. Savoir céder, ruser avec l’adversaire, la laisser faire pour avoir la prise, c’était cela, aux grandes époques, jouer de la musique."
